Llamas are the perfect accompaniment to safeguard your precious
alpacas. They are quieter and just as effective than do gs, and much safer to
pasture together than donkeys or other hooved animals that can kick and cause
damage to your alpacas. They will sound a loud piercing alarm call if
predators approach, and will chase away predators, including fox, coyote, bear or loose dogs.
We have seen our llama chase a black bear away from the fence line! Yet
llamas are also smart enough to recognize your pet dogs and will not be aggressive
toward your pets or your guests.
Protection should be a requirement
for any alpaca farm. Consider them a living insurance policy, that will also be
another income producer on your farm as well, should you choose to breed them
too. You can also produce products from llama fleece, which is tougher and
hardier than alpaca fleece. If you so choose, you can even use them as
pack animals on hikes or trail rides. Llamas are big cousins to alpacas,
so they are naturally compatible and natural protectors. They are low
maintenance, eat the same feed and take
the same easy care as alpacas.
Our llamas also make excellent 4H animals for children, since they are
friendly, inquisitve and confident animals. Domino would love that job, since he is very tolerant
and friendly to people.
So whether if you are just starting small, or have a growing herd, consider
buying a low-cost guard llama to accompany your high-value alpaca home.
This photo shows the typical way that the llamas will stand in front and
block the alpacas from intruders. These are two young llamas
learning their job to protect two of our juvenile alpacas hiding behind them.

- Elimar's Domino

-
- Domino was born at Elimar, out of Double Dot, May 2006. He is
a devoted guard
llama, as he was born just a few days after our first alpaca girl, and has grown up
romping alongside our alpaca girls. He
is very bonded to them and our Maremma stud dog, and probably thinks that he is an alpaca
or dog. He sticks closer than a brother
to the babies and is kind to the male alpacas too.
Domino will make a wonderful guard for any alpaca herd, and he is a joy to be
around as he is very nicely
mannered and easy to lead. Plus, he has a striking black, brown & white
color pattern.
Domino will make a wonderful guard for any alpaca herd, and is very nicely
mannered and easy to lead. His friendly temperament would also make him an excellent 4H animal or pack animal
with a little more training. He is halter trained.

- Double Dot
Also known as "Dee", Double Dot is our super-guard llama, very large,
imposing, intimidating, very smart, savvy and incredibly strong. She
weighs around 350 pounds and will scare anything away! She has chased
away black bear from our fenceline. Yet she is halter trained and will
eat our of our hands. Dee is also a great breeding llama, easily rebred
and consistent in producing beautiful babies with ease, without issue, and
providing them with plenty of milk (often an issue with U.S. llamas).
She is also an excellent mother, proven many times over by producing
offspring better quality than herself, with plenty of milk for strong,
healthy offspring. Double Dot is a lightly fleeced llama, with the genes
and proven ability to produce suri llama (when bred with a Suri) with silky,
curly "dredlock" fleece.
Copper Kettle

Copper girl is a beautiful intense red llama, with great potential for
breeeding for either guard or show ring. She has beautiful poise and
presence. Her lines are excellent for guarding. She is related
to Double Dot. She is a nice combination of beauty and
protectiveness with an easy-to-handle personality.
